Complete Denomination
UN Environment Programme - GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP ON MARINE LITTER
Short Description
Following the recomendations contained in the Manila Declaration, the Global Partnership on Marine Litter (GPML) was launched in June 2012 at Rio + 20 in Brazil. The GPML, besides being supportive of the Global Partnership on Waste Management, seeks to protect human health and the global environment by the reduction and management of marine litter as its main goal, through several specific objectives. The GPML is a global partnership gathering international agencies, Governments, NGOs, academia, private sector, civil society and individuals. Participants contribute to the development and implementation of GPML activities. UN Environment launched #CleanSeas in February 2017, with the aim of engaging governments, the general public, civil society and the private sector in the fight against marine plastic litter. Over the next five years, they will address the root-cause of marine litter by targeting the production and consumption of non-recoverable and single-use plastic. To do this effectively, they need citizens to be aware, engaged and active in addressing the problem in their own lives and beyond. They are also giving a platform to hundreds of local organizations who are already doing important work on marine litter to highlight their efforts.
