Acronym
GHOST
Title
Techniques to reduce the impact of ghost fishing gears and to improve biodiversity in North Adriatic areas.
Summary
This LIFE project GHOST promoted concrete measures to preserve and improve the ecological status of the rocky habitats (Tegnùe) in the north Adriatic Sea. The impacts of ALDFG on marine biodiversity was evaluated and the removed gears/nets processed to identify appropriate procedures for recycling/reuse, as well as the economic value of the ecosystem benefits resulting from the removal/reduction. A Code of Conduct was drawn up for fishermen awareness on the issue. Many technical reports about different actoins implemented and a regulation addressing various issues associated to sustainable management of ALDFG were also poroduced, as reference tools for local managing authorities.
